For Immediate Release: November 22, 2013
Winnipeg, Manitoba: This November (2013), NSD Tech Inc. assisted in the fundraising efforts for the Typhoon Haiyan Disaster Relief Fund by providing IT support for the event. The fundraiser was held at the Philippine Canadian Cultural Centre and attended by the Honourable PM Stephen Harper.
Prime Minister Harper released a statement saying that Canada would stand by to assist in any way it could.
“Our officials in Ottawa and at our missions in Manila continue to closely monitor the situation, and remain in contact with relevant local officials and humanitarian partners. I am keenly aware of all the Filipino-Canadians anxiously waiting for news on their loved ones.”
Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird announced that Canada would send $5 million to support organizations helping typhoon Haiyan victims.
Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger pledged $100,000 on behalf of the province to help people affected by the typhoon. He explained the money would flow through the Manitoba Council for International Co-operation.
“The lives of thousands of families have been forever changed by what is being called one of the most powerful typhoons to ever hit landfall. Our thoughts are with those families today as they face such unimaginable loss and devastation.” Selinger said in a news release.
Typhoon Haiyan hit portions of South East Asia, however, the hardest hit was the Philippines. Typhoon Haiyan was the deadliest Philippine typhoon on record, killing at least 6300 people in the country alone. It made landfall November 7th, gradually weakened and then made five additional landfalls in the country before emerging over the South China Sea. Homes and communities were destroyed when winds of 235 km/hour which gusted to 275 km/h blew through with a storm surge six metres high. In some cases, residents were cut off from basic needs. According to United Nation Officials, about 11 million people were affected, many of which were left homeless.
The Filipino community worked hard to come together to send funds and other necessities to the Philippines. The fundraising social which the Prime Minister attended raised over $8000.00. Over $72,000.00 was raised through the Philippine-Canadian Centre of Manitoba.
Other fundraisers held in addition to this one by the Philippine-Canadian Centre of Manitoba were the fundraisers at Jimel’s International Cuisine on November 30, and at the Garden City Shopping Centre on November 16. They also accepted donations of food and other material items to ship to the hardest hit areas.
Among other events that were organized was a prayer vigil, held on Wednesday, November 13. This provided a time for the community to come together to pray and think about their brothers and sisters overseas. Although it was the most difficult event for Filipinos to witness, everyone in the community worked hard, banded together and did their best – no matter if the gesture was large or small.
NSD Tech wrote on their Facebook page,
“Nitin & I thank the Honourable PM Mr. Stephen Harper kind-heartedly for gracing the Typhoon Haiyan Disaster Relief Fundraiser event with his presence and giving us a chance to stand with him in the same frame.”
